Auggie Anderson of Covert Affairs is a Good Man to Watch Your Back

Posted by Andrea Lewis at Oct 24, 2010 | No Comments »

On the new spy series Covert Affairs, Auggie Anderson (Christopher Gorham) is a good guy to have watching your back. A Technical Operations Officer for the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), Auggie provides invaluable assistance to new recruit Annie Walker (Piper Perabo), despite the fact that he is legally blind.

From Special Ops to Tech Ops

Originally a member of a Special Ops team stationed in Iraq, Auggie made a bad judgment call that, in his words, turned him into Ray Charles. Now stationed at CIA Headquarters in Langley, VA, Auggie is a fixture in the computer room, at least until Annie needs his help out in the field. For his normal day-to-day duties, Anderson uses a mechanical Braille reader that lets him read computer displays by touch.

While at work, Auggie is practically never without his Grado RS2 Headphones, a favorite accessory of audiophiles because of their ingenious wooden earpieces.

Why are consumer credit scores constantly changing?

Posted by Anthony Jackson at Oct 23, 2010 | No Comments »
Each financial action a consumer takes may affect their credit score, causing it to constantly change.

The economic downturn has put Americans’ credit scores in the limelight, especially as more homeowners struggle to stave off foreclosure by refinancing or modifying their mortgage loans. Although a large majority of Americans are working to improve their scores, it’s important to understand how credit scoring works – and the factors that cause consumer scores to constantly undergo changes.

Credit scores provide a snapshot of a consumer’s financial health. This information is largely determined by the information on an individual’s credit report and his or her payment history, both of which evolve on a monthly basis. For example, if a consumer is late with a payment, his or her credit score will decline slightly. Read more…

How to Avoid Identity Theft by an Ex-Spouse

Posted by Gregory Young at Oct 23, 2010 | No Comments »

Maintaining a good credit score can be a challenge, especially in America – the land where plastic fuels the retail industry. Yes, we all know the temptation to buy that unattainable item. And most of the time, we create our own debt. But what happens when an ex-spouse takes control of your identity and places red marks on your credit report?

According to recent statistics, this is an all too common scenario, and in many cases, an ex steals a spouse’s identity as a way to get revenge. If an ex knows your Social Security Number, he can easily get hold of your identity and obtain credit cards in your name. If your ex-spouse was the secondary card holder on your credit card, it makes theft that much easier. He can buy whatever he wants. And when the bill is due, the credit card company will come after you – the primary card holder.

As a result, your credit score can take a hit. While

It’s no big surprise that so many people love the idea of a 0 balance transfer credit card. After all, these cards can really get you out of a tight situation. If you need a bit of breathing room to make your payments, transferring your debt to a 0% balance card can alleviate interest payments and allow you some time to get your situation back under control without gathering huge amounts of interest.

Small Business Loans

Posted by admin at Oct 20, 2010 | No Comments »

Small business loans are obtained in order to start, expand or renovate a small business. There are several types of small business loans, and most can be obtained through federal, state, and local government as well as traditional lending institutions. Federal, state and local governments offer a wide range of financing options, including low-interest loans, capital venture loans, and scientific and development grants. A written business plan is required, and should contain not only the mission statement for the new business, with a detailed cash flow projection that covers at least a 12 month period.

Once the loan is secured, the money can be used to purchase property, make renovations to existing structures, update equipment and supplies, for the flooring of inventory and for working capital. As with any loan, take the time to do your homework, and make sure to research the lenders and their requirements before applying for this type of loan. Read more…

Fed says lending conditions, credit improved slightly

Lending activity held steady or crept up slightly at low levels while credit quality improved incrementally between September and October 8, according to the central bank’s Beige Book. The Richmond and Dallas Districts reported marked increases in lending activity, but overall across the country there was little improvement. Meanwhile, Chicago said it saw its credit conditions improve, and other areas saw some increased pressure to price loans more aggressively.

However, lending to consumers remained a bit sluggish, despite some reports of improvement, the Fed said. The Cleveland and Dallas Districts reported increased demand for auto loans, while several others saw residential mortgage lending and refinances increase.

These slight improvements led to little change in nationwide credit quality, the Beige Book noted. Read more…

But don’t send those kids off to bartending school just yet. 529 plans, if you haven’t heard of them, offer some great tax incentives and even ways to collect ‘free money’ to save for your children’s higher education.

Texas small business owners have dour outlook on economy

Small business owners in Texas say they are skeptical about the economy compared to those living elsewhere, according to the latest survey of companies by American Express. The poll considered Texas, Florida, New York and California to be bellweather states, and only those in Texas said they felt as though the economy wasn’t improving.

Texans were the only group that said they believed tax cuts were the most important factor in driving business growth, and only 36 percent said they were optimistic about both the economy and their business prospects, the report said. More than half of California owners said they believed they would soon be in better shape, compared to 49 percent in Florida and 39 percent in New York.

The survey also found that consumers that are part of Generation Y had a more positive outlook on the economy, while those from Generation X are more likely to employ themselves. Read more…
