Summer is just around the corner experts have been stressing the urgency to teens and college students that they should start looking for summer jobs right now. Most people may wonder, what’s the big urgency? There is still time to apply for jobs for the summer – summer is still months away. But, as we all know “The early bird catches the worm.”
The importance of apply for summer jobs early
Students are urged to apply for summer jobs early so that they have a better opportunity of landing one by the time summer gets here. Boyer also recommends that for those who held jobs last summer should applying for the same jobs this year because managers are more willing to rehire returning employees. Their reports show that managers will fill openings with 65 percent of returning workers and 35 percent of new worker.
Entering the working world
In a press release, Shawn Boyer, CEO of SnagAJob.com, said “First jobs are a stepping stone to the working world. They’re a time to learn about responsibility, work ethic and contributing to a team. Teens, especially, must be willing to accept an entry-level job, work a flexible schedule and emphasize a positive attitude and willingness to learn.”
SnagAJob is a firm that assist individual to find work. Their annual survey showed that hiring teenagers and college students will be about the same as last year which is not so bad. They also found that 29 percent of hiring managers plan to hire the same amount of workers as last year.
Key to landing a summer job!
Do your research – this means to come prepared to your job interview. Research the company online, get to know a little about them.
Think of your future career goals – If you are interested in food preparation then apply for a job at one of your favorite restaurants. Don’t look at this summer job as just a way to make money only for the summer but as preparing for your future.
Contact your network – Tell everyone in your social network that you are looking for a summer job- most people land jobs just by networking.
Dress the part – Dress appropriately for your job interview. Jeans, wrinkled clothes and dirty old tennis shoes are a big no-no when going on an interview.
Be prepared – In addition to researching the company, you should walk with an updated resume that is catered to the job that you are applying for. Walk with a pen just in case you need to fill out an application or take a test.
Broaden your search – Don’t keep your job search too narrow. Apply for a variety of jobs so that you can increase your chances of landing at least one job.
Don’t be late for your interview – Being late leaves a bad first impression and it shows that you will probably not show up for work on-time either.
