Preparing for Your first Job Interview – What to do?

Posted by Gregory Young | No Comments »

There is a saying that you only get one chance to make a good first impression. Well, consider this to be true when it comes to job interviews. The first image you present to potential employers is the first thing they see and the deciding factor in hiring you for the job. Believe it or not, most employers already know from the moment you walk through the door, if they are going to hire you or not. Your image is the first thing an employer sees, before you even have a chance to speak. This is why it is so important that your image says “Winner”, because you never get a second chance to make a good first impression!

What should you do on Your First Job Interview?

Cover letter is a must – Always include a cover letter with your resume in email, in person or in the mail. It emphasizes why you want the job and why you think you are well qualified to be chosen for the position. Your cover letter will play a very important role in helping you sell yourself to employers and could very well be the thing that will help you land the job.

Preparation – Good preparation is the key to a successful interview. Do a bit of research on the company, get to know what they do, their mission and goals. You can get this information online.

Dress the part – Even if the dress code of the company is casual, you still want to dress like you’re going to a job interview. Dress professionally, but don’t overdo it. Wear solid, formal colors, noting too colorful, tight or bright.

Eye contact – When addressing the interviewer, maintain eye contact but do not stare. And if there are two or more interviewers, give them equal attention.

Firm hand shake – As you introduce yourself to the interviewer(s), shake hands firmly, maintain eye contact and say that you are pleased to meet them.

Be on time – It is very important to be at your first job interview at least 5 minutes early. However, do not get there too early. Showing up late is a big no-no.

Be confident and honest – Answer the questions honestly and in a confident, firm voice. Speak clearly and at a normal pace, try not to give one word answer or say more than is necessary.

Thank you letter – After the interview, it is polite to send a thank you letter to the interviewer, thanking them for the interview and for considering you for the position.

Questions to Expect on Your First Job Interview

The first thing will almost always be: Tell us about yourself. The next questions may be something along the lines of: why do you want this job, why you think you are a good match for this position, why do you want to quit your current job, do you have any questions? Many of the questions you will be asked will probably come straight from what you have written down on your application. You should be ready for these questions and answer them with confidence and show enthusiasm.

Last but not the least Good Luck to all my dear friends out there !
