Though many consumers may face difficulties when it comes to their credit cards, those accounts could also afford the opportunity to help others who are having an even more strenuous time.

According to the New York Times’ Bucks blog, a number of credit card companies are allowing their cardholders to use the rewards points they have accumulated in order to help the people of Haiti as they continue to face the plight wrought by a series of earthquakes experienced in the country.

Though the final numbers may not have been tallied yet, hundreds of thousands of people in the country died as a result of the tremors, which occurred near the Haitian capital of Port-au-Prince. Thousands of buildings were also razed during the disaster.

One company that allows its rewards program to be used for donations is Capitol One, which started its No Hassle Giving Site in 2008. Through the site, customers can donate rewards points to more than 1.2 million charities in the U.S., which includes those that are helping with the efforts in Haiti.

An official from Capitol One said in the blog that the company has seen an 850 percent increase when compared to January of last year.

American Express is also allowing points from its Membership Rewards program to be used to donate funds for Haitian relief. For every 1,000 points donated, $10 will be donated to organizations that are helping in the country.

“Donations can be made in increments of 1,000, 5,000, 10,000, 50,000 and 100,000 points,” the blog said.

Along with donations, American Express recently said that it will allow customers to use their points in order to help pay their taxes. The program is being made possible through a partnership with Pay1040 and Official Payments Corp.
