Credit Card Debt Relief for UK Residents

Posted by admin at Jul 05, 2011 | No Comments »

The United Kingdom’s government estimates that as many as 700,000 of its residents are using some form of informal arrangement as a means of paying off their debts as a result of the financial pressure they are experiencing.

Whilst this might offer a degree of relief from the overburdening monthly costs of their debts, an informal arrangement will not provide them with any actual debt relief in the form of debt forgiveness.

To stand a chance of some debt forgiveness they would need to consider entering an IVA.

An IVA, or Individual Voluntary Arrangement, is a formal debt solution available to all UK residents who are struggling to keep up with their contractual debt repayments.

Unlike an informal arrangement, under which payments continue until the whole outstanding debt has been repaid, an IVA has a predetermined repayment term usually set to 5 years, after which, all outstanding debt balances are written off.

Donating Credit Card Rewards to Charity?

Posted by Anthony Jackson at Jun 28, 2011 | No Comments »

Q: One of my friends told me she donated her credit card rewards to a charity, which I think is a great idea. How do I know if my credit card company offers this?

A: Most rewards credit cards offer an option to donate your points or miles to charity. It’s win-win: the credit card company gets to look good and their customers get to feel like they are doing a bit of good in the world. Whichever rewards card you have, you can probably find an option to donate to a worthy cause.

Citi has a rewards section devoted to donating to charity. Right now it only has two rewards options, donating to the Red Cross or receiving a Giftback card, which allows you to donate to many different charities.

Discover also has an option for donating your rewards to a charity. T

Should I Cosign For My Child’s Student Loans?

Posted by Anthony Jackson at Jun 23, 2011 | No Comments »

Q: My son is taking out a student loan this summer before he starts at university in the fall. Should I cosign this loan for him since the bank recommends it?

A: Probably not. Most financial experts agree that cosigning is rarely a good idea. When you cosign a loan for someone, you are left responsible for that loan if the person can’t pay. If your child ends up in a rough spot and can no longer make payments, the bank that gave your child the loan will now come after you…and if you can’t take over the payments, this will hurt your credit score.

Usually when a bank requires a cosigner, this is because the person is likely to default. Even if you think your son or daughter is responsible, responsible people lose their jobs too. If the bank, with expert analysts, isn’t willing to take on this risk, why should you? Unless

What you Aren’t Doing Could be Hurting your Credit Score

Posted by Anthony Jackson at Jun 22, 2011 | No Comments »

What? I’m not approved for the car loan? How could this be? I’m doing everything right. Aren’t I?

You may think that your credit score is picture-perfect; after all, you have a few credit cards and you manage to pay on them every month. So, what’s the problem? The truth is that there may be things you aren’t doing that are putting a dent in your credit score:

  1. You aren’t using your credit card – Many of us think that because we have a credit card we automatically have good credit, but this just isn’t true. An open credit card is a good first step, but in order to establish a solid credit history (and therefore bump up your credit score) you must spend on the card regularly. What many people don’t know is that simply making a purchase or two each month is enough to begin building a strong credit score.
  2. You aren’t looking at your credit report – What you don’t know may hurt you, especially when it comes to your credit report. Any credit report could

Eccentric Money-Saving Methods

Posted by Anthony Jackson at Jun 22, 2011 | No Comments »

Here at Credit Karma, we like to examine the ways people save money–whether that’s through conventional money-saving tips or by more extreme means.

I’m not exactly a personal finance guru and I’m definitely not an “extreme couponer” (yet), but just like everyone else, I have my own rather quirky, daily money-saving strategies.

Here’s an exploration of the stranger side of my frugal personality:

The Toothpaste Tube Tormenter

I have difficulty throwing things away until I have exhausted every last use out of the container. Nowhere is this more apparent than with toothpaste. I’ll keep a near-empty tube even if it’ll take me upwards of ten minutes (and the Jaws of Life) to extract the dentist-recommended pea-sized dollop.
